Born in 1925 in Rochester Minnesota, Bill was the youngest of three children born to Porter Paisley Vinson and Lenore Dunlap Vinson.
Bill's Earliest Memories
Another of Bill's earliest memories involves an image from the movies of a line of battleships stretching all the way into the horizon. This memory stands out because he was reminded of it during WWII when he was on the USS Blue Ridge as he saw the procession of battleships stretching as far as he could see.
In Rochester Bill's aunt lived next door. He remembers going next door and having plum pudding, which he has always disliked.
The year Bill's family moved from Rochester to Richmond, VA, he was sent to camp in Everitt MN. This was the first time Bill was away from home and remembers feeling nervous about it. He thoroughly enjoyed his camp though. During his stay at camp Bill traveled to International Falls and Red Lake. International Falls is the northernmost part of the contiguous United States. It was a scenic visit.
For Christmas Bill's parents went to great lengths to make it seem as if Santa Claus had really come during the night. When Bill and his sister would go to bed there would not even be a Christmas tree in the living room. In the morning a tree would be there, thoroughly decorated and surrounded with presents.
Visiting his Grandmother
Bill's mother's mother was the only grandparent he was able to get to know. She lived in a cabin in Canada, 1000 miles north of Toronto. As a child Bill remembers that they had to travel there by boat from Minnesota.
Bill's aunt, Mattie Maude Vinson, lived in Davidson her whole life. Maude took care of her mother, Lillie, until she died in 1926.
He would come to visit Aunt Maude throughout his childhood and adulthood. Maude taught French and Math at the local high school. When the school burned down Maude taught in Phi Hall until a new school was built. Bill remembers that his aunt was a very strict teacher.
