James Edward Raeford Sr. is a barber in Davidson, North Carolina, and has been for almost 42 years. He owns Raeford's Barber Shop on Main Street and another shop by the same name in Cornelius, North Carolina. "Raeford," as he prefers to be called, lived through the Civil Rights Movement and its particular manifestations in Davidson. Having grown up in Grays Creek, North Carolina, Raeford was the son of a sharecropper and part of a family that never had an abundance of money. Through many good and bad business ventures, Raeford at age 71, has finally achieved success as a barber.
